Position Details

Granville County Public Schools is seeking a dedicated and student-centered Student Services Personnel to support our efforts to prevent and reduce youth substance use through early intervention, relationship building, and targeted student and family support. This position is part of Building Resilient Youth, an initiative designed to strengthen protective factors, build coping and decision-making skills, increase family engagement, improve school attendance, reduce behavioral concerns, and connect students and families with appropriate community resources. The position is grant-funded and will end at the conclusion of the 2028-2029 school year. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with students, families, school staff, and community partners to identify students who may be at increased risk for substance use, school disengagement, behavioral concerns, or other challenges and provide proactive supports before concerns escalate. The primary focus of this position will be prevention and intervention related to youth substance use and the risk factors that can contribute to substance use, while addressing the broader social-emotional, behavioral, family, and school-related needs that affect student success. The position will serve as an important bridge between the school, the student, the family, and community resources—helping students develop the skills, relationships, and supports they need to make healthy choices and remain connected to school Key Responsibilities Develop positive, trusting relationships with students and serve as a consistent source of support and encouragement. Provide individual and small-group interventions focused on substance-use prevention, healthy decision-making, coping skills, emotional regulation, problem-solving, and development of positive relationships. Identify students who may benefit from additional support through school data, staff referrals, student self-referrals, family concerns, and other indicators of risk. Provide early intervention for students demonstrating behavioral, attendance, academic, social-emotional, or other concerns that may increase their risk for substance use or school disengagement. Facilitate prevention and education activities for students, including lessons, small groups, peer-support opportunities, and other evidence-informed activities. Engage parents and caregivers through individual meetings, educational opportunities, and family support activities. Collaborate with school counselors, social workers, administrators, teachers, and other student-services personnel to coordinate interventions and monitor student progress. Connect students and families with appropriate school, community, and behavioral health resources when additional support is needed. Assist with developing individualized intervention plans and monitoring the effectiveness of interventions. Promote school connectedness, positive peer relationships, resilience, and other protective factors associated with healthy youth development. Participate in multidisciplinary meetings and communicate appropriately with school and community partners. Maintain appropriate documentation of services, interventions, referrals, and student progress. Maintain confidentiality and comply with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and school system policies. Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor. Preferred Qualifications Granville County Public Schools is seeking a candidate who demonstrates a strong commitment to working with adolescents and families and who understands the importance of prevention and early intervention rather than waiting for a crisis to occur. Preferred qualifications may include: Master's degree in social work, school social work, or school counseling Experience working with children, adolescents, and/or families. Experience providing individual or group interventions. Knowledge of youth substance-use prevention and intervention strategies. Experience working in a school or other youth-serving environment. Strong communication, relationship-building, and collaboration skills. Ability to establish trusting relationships with students while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries. Experience connecting families with community resources. Familiarity with trauma-informed practices, restorative practices, positive behavioral interventions, or other evidence-informed approaches. Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Clinical Social Worker Associate, or other appropriate professional credential is preferred but not required. Understands that meaningful prevention begins with relationships, connection, and early intervention.
