POSITION TITLE: Health Room Nurse (RN or LPN) � Elementary School STATUS: Part-Time; 2 days per week (Wednesdays required, plus 1 additional flexible day); 9-month position consistent with student attendance days LOCATION: East High Elementary School DEPARTMENT: Support Services EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Non-Exempt REPORTS TO: Supervisor of Health Services & Building Principal SUPERVISES: None HOURLY RANGE: $21-$32 General Responsibilities / Job Summary Provides compassionate direct nursing care, first aid, and medication administration to elementary school students (grades K�5). Maintains accurate health records, communicates closely with parents/guardians and school staff regarding student health needs, and assists in creating a warm, safe, and nurturing health room environment. Essential Functions & Duties Direct Student Care & First Aid: Provide gentle, age-appropriate assessment and nursing care for minor injuries, sudden illnesses, temperature checks, and common elementary complaints. Medication Administration: Safely administer prescribed daily medications and emergency rescue medications (e.g., EpiPens, inhalers) according to district policy and physician orders. Health Record Management: Document all health room visits, maintain comprehensive health records, and record annual screenings (height, weight, vision, and hearing) under the direction of the Certified School Nurse. Parent & Staff Communication: Notify parents/guardians promptly regarding illnesses, injuries, potential contagious conditions, or emergency situations. Maintain open lines of communication with classroom teachers regarding student health concerns or accommodations. Health Room Maintenance: Set up, organize, clean, and restock the school health room to ensure a sterile, safe, and welcoming environment for young children. Contagious Disease Monitoring: Check physician notes for students returning from illness or injury and monitor for communicable childhood diseases according to public health guidelines. Administrative & Support Tasks: Perform general health office duties, including answering phones, filing, updating medical alert lists, and delivering messages. Special Coverage: Assist with health oversight during school assemblies, special events, or student field trips as requested. Professional Standards: Perform clinical skills within the scope of the state Nurse Practice Act, attend district-required training, and maintain strict student privacy under HIPAA/FERPA guidelines. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Pediatric Care & Approach: Strong knowledge of elementary-age child development, pediatric first aid, CPR/AED procedures, and a comforting, patient demeanor with young children. Clinical Precision: Proficiency in administering medications, assessing symptoms, taking vital signs, and handling pediatric medical emergencies quickly and calmly. Communication & Rapport: Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with young students, reassure anxious parents, and collaborate with school staff and healthcare providers. Confidentiality: Exceptional commitment to maintaining strict confidentiality regarding student medical records and family details. Adaptability & Organization: Ability to prioritize student needs, multi-task in a high-energy environment with frequent interruptions, and use sound clinical judgment. Physical Capability: Ability to bend, crouch, reach, lift or assist in positioning students (up to 50 lbs), and respond rapidly to urgent situations on school grounds or playgrounds. Minimum Qualifications Education & Licensing: Current, unencumbered state license as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Certifications: Current BLS CPR/AED Certification required. Experience: Prior nursing experience required; pediatric, community health, or school nursing experience preferred. Clearances: Must clear all state and federal background checks required for employment in K�12 public education. Working Conditions School setting including the health room, classrooms, gymnasium, hallways, playground, and outdoors on school grounds. Fast-paced, interactive environment with regular contact with young children, school staff, and visitors.
