HEARING ITINERANT Job Description POSITION TITLE Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH) The Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH) is directly supervised by the Program Officer for Related Services and provides specialized instruction and support to students who are deaf or hard of hearing, ensuring equitable access to the general education curriculum. This role involves collaborating with school staff, families, and related service providers to create an inclusive learning environment that meets the unique communication, academic, and social-emotional needs of students. WORK MONTHS 10 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Provide specialized instruction to students with hearing loss in accordance with their IEP, 504 Plan, or Service Plan. Adapt and modify curriculum materials to support language acquisition, literacy, and academic achievement. Utilize differentiated instruction strategies to address students’ diverse communication needs, including spoken language, American Sign Language (ASL), cued speech, and total communication. Implement strategies for auditory training, speechreading, and self-advocacy development. Use formal and informal assessments to monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly. Foster a supportive classroom and school environment that promotes inclusion and peer interaction. Work closely with general education teachers to implement appropriate modifications and accommodations. Collaborate with speech-language pathologists (SLPs), audiologists, interpreters, special educators, and assistive technology specialists to optimize student access to instruction. Support school personnel in understanding hearing loss, effective instructional strategies, and assistive technology. Provide family engagement and training opportunities to enhance home-school collaboration. Participate in IEP meetings, multidisciplinary team discussions, and school-based professional development. Ensure students have access to assistive listening devices (e.g., hearing aids, cochlear implants, FM/DM systems) and troubleshoot functionality as needed. Support the use of captioning services, visual schedules, communication boards, and other accessibility tools. Advocate for effective communication access in both academic and extracurricular activities. Develop, implement, and monitor IEPs and progress reports in compliance with state and federal special education laws (IDEA, ADA, Section 504). Maintain accurate documentation of student performance, accommodations, and service delivery. Ensure appropriate accommodations and modifications for standardized testing and classroom assessments. YEARS OF EXPERIENCE Varies based on needs of the department KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES Knowledge of best practices in deaf education, language development, and auditory training. Knowledge of various communication modalities, including ASL, spoken language, total communication, and cued speech. Knowledge of special education laws, policies, and procedures (IDEA, ADA, Section 504). Knowledge of the impact of hearing loss on language acquisition, literacy, and academic performance. Knowledge of assistive technology and accessibility tools used to support students with hearing loss. Knowledge of multicultural perspectives related to Deaf culture and bilingual-bicultural education. Skills in developing and implementing individualized educational strategies for students with hearing loss. Skills in using differentiated instruction to meet the diverse needs of students. Skills in assessing and monitoring student progress using formal and informal measures. Skills in effectively collaborating with school staff, families, and community resources. Skills in troubleshooting and maintaining assistive listening devices. Ability to communicate effectively with students, families, and educational teams. Ability to adapt instruction based on student needs, IEP goals, and assessment data. Ability to advocate for students' rights and access to equitable educational opportunities. Ability to remain flexible and problem-solve in varied educational settings Enthusiastic about the fundamental goal of advancing student achievement in an urban public school district.
