Position Details

Title: Guidance Counselor - Leave of Absence Opening November 30, 2026 - April 30, 2027 Qualifications: New Jersey Guidance Certificate Reports To: Superintendent of Schools and/or Appropriate Building Principal Job Goal: To counsel students regarding educational and vocational goals as well as personal and social concerns. Performance Responsibilities: To counsel students in individual routine matters, problems referred by teachers, parents, administrators or counselee. To keep on file pertinent data relative to student, school and community activities. To assist teachers in interpreting records to help them understand their students. To speak with DYFS and law enforcement personnel as needed. To refer students to the appropriate persons or agencies in the community when special assistance is needed. To interview and help transition students entering for the first time, and those withdrawing or transferring. To contact the student in cases of failure, excessive absences, tardiness or outstanding success. To counsel students on post-graduate educational and vocational plans. To counsel each student in the selection of courses of study in keeping with that student's purposes, ability, interests and vocational and educational goals. To interpret test scores, past achievement records and other evaluative data. To encourage participation in co-curricular activities. To administer and proctor appropriate group tests. To review credits on permanent record cards. To arrange for homework assignments when students or parents request because of illness or extended absence. To assist in arranging for home instruction. To visit colleges, attend workshops, visit community absences, businesses, industries and business or technical schools. Attend staff meetings and serve on staff committees, as required. Supervise behavior on school property for the safety and well being of students, personnel and visitors. Perform other duties, which may be within the scope of his/her employment, and certifications as may be assigned by administrative superiors.
